A Satisfying Blend of Flavors: Aster Leaf Wraps and Rice (취나물쌈밥)

Chamchwi Ssambap

This dish takes Steamed Five-grain Rice mixed with sesame oil, formed into elongated rice balls, wrapped in blanched aster leaf, and flavored with mixed paste. It is also called “Chamchwi Ssambap.” Chwinamul refers to the young shoot of aster scaber (chamchwi). Chamchwi, also called namulchwi, is said to be the foremost among all mountain herbs in taste. An old saying goes, “wrap the steamed five-grain rice in chamchwi leaves on the morning of Daeboreum (the year’s first full moon day) to welcome in good luck.” Chamchwi is blanched, patted dry, and flavored with sesame oil. Put the rice ball onto the leaf, make a wrap, and serve with mixed paste.
