Steamed Five-Grain Rice: A Delectable Lunar New Year Tradition
The dish is called steamed five-grain rice because it is made with five grains. Depending on the region, it is also called glutinous rice, multigrain rice, and five-grain and multigrain rice. It is a traditional food eaten on the 15th day of lunar January. On this day, the ancestors prepared steamed five-grain rice in the hopes that all farming would prosper within the year. Glutinous rice, red beans, sorghum, glutinous millet, and beans are regarded as the five grains. Non-glutinous rice is sometimes added instead of glutinous rice; barleycorn may also be added at times.
