Fried Twist Cookies

This traditional Korean sweet confectionery is made by making a dough with flour and ginger juice, rolling it out, cutting it into rectangular pieces, then scoring and twisting the dough before deep-frying. One can also use spinach, omija, gardenia, and other natural ingredients to color the dough. After deep-frying, Fried Twist Cookies are dipped into a sweet syrup and sprinkled with powdered pine nuts. These cookies are crispy and fragrant, thanks to the ginger and cinnamon used in the dough. They are also very presentable, especially when colored with natural ingredients, so these cookies are popular among valued guests and children. Its Korean name, “Maejakgwa,” uses the Sino-Korean characters for plum and sparrow, as its shape is said to resemble how a sparrow perches on a plum tree.
